Lyrics that Lift - The Art of Listening through Song

Our April Art of Listening Session, facilitated by Aurora, has shapeshifted from an in-person circle to an invitation to explore the sounds that lift your spirit wherever you are sheltering.

"Behold, a sacred voice is calling you,

all over the sky a sacred voice is calling"

~Black Elk

What is calling you? The art of listening can be practiced in community, in solitude and in solidarity in these times - knowing we are all discerning what is calling daily. May you take time to listen to the tunes below, enjoy some music that you love, and/or find a special sit-spot outside and listen to the sounds that your surroundings provide.

Music for your ears:

Sara Thomson’s ~ "Rhapsody of Rest"  & "River Dream"

MaMuse ~ " Prayers for Freedom" & "We Shall be Known"

Rising Appalachia ~ "Medicine" & "Wider Circles"

The Lost Words Spellsongs ~ "The Lost Words Blessing"

Jamie Sieber ~ "The Invitation" & "Love Song for Humanity"

Like what you hear? Support these musicians who are greatly impacted by this pandemic by purchasing their music.

Let the music and lyrics, birdsong, and spring rains wash over you and then put pen to paper and see what wants to spill out of you:

Prompts to deepen your reflections:

  • What song is in my heart?

  • How have I neglected my voice?

  • What is the world calling for & how might I respond?

A poem on courting one’s muse:

Seeking My Radiant Muse

Who is my true and lasting Muse?
Guide of my imagination,
Choreographer of my word,
Mystic whisperer?

Rain what do you have to say?
Wind, what message do you bring?
Songbird, I am listening.

Violet and lily, is earth awakening my green?
Golden maple, what must I forgive and release?
Root, reach into my underground rivers.

Do clouds form my secret animal:
A deer, a mare, a feline?

Sunrise, open my veiled eyes,
Sunset, resolve the doubts of my day.

Grandmother, whose spirit has passed into rainbows,
Mirror sister with whom I comb each evening,
Which of you sparks all I can do and be and say?

I will dream you tonight.
I will call you into my dreams.
